Description
An illustration from the cycle “The Ancient Lithuanian Faith”.
It depicts one of the most frequently mentioned beings in ancient Lithuanian legends: Ragana (“Witch”)- a seer, wise woman, and enchantress possessing exceptional powers. It is said that the Ragana is the goddess of the forests. Her name is related to the Lithuanian word “regėti“, meaning “to see, to perceive”. During the Christianization period she was demonized, degraded, and pushed into the depths of the forests.
