Description

It depicts a chthonic ruler of the underworld, a figure often mentioned in ancient Lithuanian mythology. He was believed to live in forests, swamps, and caves, and was closely associated with the world of the dead. He guarded water and the treasures hidden within the earth, including valuables concealed by people. The main role of this spirit-later called the devil – was to protect the riches of the earth, look after the poor, and punish dishonest people, oppressors, and the greedy. He could change his form, appearing as a snake, a bird, or a handsome man. In the legends, the devil would even compete with the god. He was said to be the brother of Perkūnas, the thunder god, and angered him by stealing fire. When Perkūnas strikes a tree with lightning, it is believed that the devil is hiding beneath it. With the arrival of Christianity, he was equated with Satan and transformed into a figure of fear and persecution.
