Description
An illustration from the cycle “The Ancient Lithuanian Faith”.
It depicts one of the most frequently mentioned beings in ancient Lithuanian legends. It is said that laumės most often appear near bodies of water, springs, and forest edges. They may look like young, beautiful women with very large breasts and loose, unbraided hair, or like old women. They can replace a child with a changeling; they care for children left behind by accident and reward them, but tear apart those intentionally abandoned. They perform women’s tasks such as spinning and weaving. Laumė can either harm a person or help them. According to the tales, Laumė is the wife of the thunder god who, after being cast out of the heavens for infidelity, married the devil upon descending to the earth.
